Approximately one in every three hundred Singaporeans has HIV/AIDS,
and many don't know it.

(Analysis of 3,000 anonymous leftover blood samples earlier this year showed that one in
350 public hospital patients had the virus – Straits Times 6th October 2007 .)

We offer HIV screening that is based on a window period between infection and detectability of disease of about 12 days instead of the usual 6 months as provided by other frequently used methods. It may be suitable for:

  • Individuals with dysfunctional anxiety associated with unknown HIV status
  • High risk individuals in the social and entertainment industry

Straits Times Feature on Prophylactic HIV Treatment
Excerpt from the Straits Times 13 July 2008:

Dr Tan Hiok Hee, head of the DSC clinic and senior consultant at the National Skin Centre, told The Sunday Times that the centre made PEP available to the public in 2004. It can also be prescribed by doctors in private practice here.

Since then, Dr Tan has treated 22 people with the drug cocktail. Dr Lin Li from the Communicable Diseases Centre has treated three.

The patients - educated, mostly professionals and all males save one - sought treatment after unsafe sex.

All tested negative after completing their treatments although it is not known if their sex partners were HIV positive in the first place.

Doctors interviewed by The Sunday Times took great pains to emphasise that PEP does not always work and cannot replace safe-sex practices.

'Studies have shown that PEP is not 100 per cent foolproof against HIV. Its efficacy is around 81 per cent,' said Dr Tan.

Raped after drink was spiked, celibate gets HIV
Excerpt from the Straits Times 13 July 2008:

Although well-read, the 49-year-old had never bothered to find out more about Aids and other sexually transmitted diseases because he was celibate.

That lack of curiosity is something he now regrets deeply.

'I wish I had known about PEP. I could have been HIV-free now, even if I cannot erase what happened to me,' he told The Sunday Times.

He said he had contracted the virus after being raped during a trip to Taiwan in March this year.

...

A series of tests found him HIV positive. There were also lesions on his anal wall and he had anal warts, gonorrhoea and chlamydia too.

Blinking back tears, the devout Buddhist said: 'Imagine - from having no sex to getting everything at one go.'

He added: 'I have been responsible all along. I have not hurt anyone, only myself, by keeping quiet and not seeking help earlier.'
